THE RISE OF MOHAMMEDAN POWER

 

 

 

The movement which next claims our attention is the religion and empire founded by Mohammedan in the opening of the seventh century, which tore away province after province from the Greek emperors of Constantinople unto its final extinction. It also brought the Eastern Church down to a subjection almost slavish, and even threatened the conquest of Europe. After thirteen centuries the Mohammedan faith still holds dominion over about six hundred millions of people, and in one continent, that of Africa, is still growing.
